Children come in, eat and talk. Nothing is asked of them for the first half hour.

Classes begin with a question
What did you see? Why did it happen? What will you try next? Children work it out, then explain it.

Children from different classes sit at the same table, so they make new friends.

Afternoons are for doing
Labs, art, music, the field and the court. Work you can hold or show at the end of it.

Notes for parents, a quick word with the class teacher, and out of the gate.
The day starts with breakfast.
Children eat first, and they are noisy about it. Then the whole school meets for assembly — one thought for the day, one song, and one child at the microphone. Lessons start only after everyone has settled in.

No child is rushed into class on day one.

A quiet corner and one known adult
No child is pushed into the classroom. There is a place to sit and watch until they feel ready.

A little inside, a little outside
A story, then a break. A song, then a break. The day is given in small pieces.

They walk in on their own
Some children do this on day two. Some take two weeks. Both are normal here.
Lessons here start with a question.
What did you see? Why did that happen? What will you try next? This takes longer than giving the answer, but children remember it for much longer.

The class is given something to think about before it is given a method.

Try, get it wrong, try again
Children work in pairs and small groups. A wrong answer is still useful here.

Explain what you found
Every child says their answer out loud. That is what makes it stay.
Every child, every year
Every child has a mentor teacher who knows how they are, not only what they scored.
So if something is wrong on a given day, someone notices before you have to ask.

Everyone eats together.
Half an hour, one kitchen, and hot food cooked here every morning. Children from different classes sit at the same table, so they make friends outside their own class.
Seats change through the term, so no child eats alone.

Learning trips, planned often.
Farms, parks, museums and workshops. Every trip is linked to what the class is studying at the time. Each year group also spends one night at school — games, stories, a late snack, and a first night away from home, safely looked after.

Before the bags are picked up, the class sits together and talks about the day: what went well, what did not, and who helped.
Then notes for parents, a few minutes with the class teacher, and out of the gate. Children leave the way they came in — known by name, and with something to tell you about at home.
One idea runs through the whole year.
Every year has a theme. This year it is Roots to Wings. You will see it in the morning assemblies, the monthly celebrations, the trips, the competitions and the stage shows.

Roots first — the habits and values a child stands on. Wings after — the confidence to go further. The events of the year are planned around this one idea.
